A single tooth dental implant at Nashoba Valley Dental is the best way to restore your smile if you’re missing one tooth or several teeth, but the rest of your smile is healthy. Learn more about this permanent, long-lasting alternative to dental bridges and partial dentures below, or contact us for a consultation with Dr. Matthew Annese now.
Single tooth implants are, by far, the most common type of dental implant. They consist of two components. The first component is an implant that is made of titanium and is shaped like a screw. This implant is surgically placed into your jaw and gum tissue, functioning as an artificial tooth root.
The second component is a dental crown. This false tooth is designed to look and feel just like a real tooth, and it screws onto the implant and is held in place securely, replacing your missing tooth. This restores the appearance and functionality of your smile.
Single tooth implants have a wide variety of benefits. First, they can last 30+ years with proper care, making them the most long-lasting method of smile restoration. They also do not ever move or shift, unlike partial dentures, and they do not require the removal of any tooth enamel from healthy teeth, unlike bridges.
Single tooth implants also look and feel completely natural. You can treat your implants just like natural teeth. All you need to do to care for them is brush twice a day for two minutes and floss once a day.
A single tooth implant also helps preserve your jaw bone. When you lose a tooth, the jaw bone is no longer stimulated by biting and chewing, so it can become weak. Implants transmit the force of chewing and biting just like a natural tooth would, preserving your jaw structure.
After you’ve been approved for a single-tooth implant and had any necessary pre-implant surgeries like a bone graft or tooth extraction, you’ll come to our office for your implant surgery.
Dr. Annese will begin by cleaning your mouth and numbing the area. You can be sedated during this procedure, if you wish. Then, he will create an opening in your gum tissue and jaw bone, based on your implant treatment plan.
Next, a titanium implant will be placed precisely into this opening. The area will be cleaned and sutured shut so that the implant can heal properly. This process will be repeated if you’re having multiple single tooth implants placed.
Then, you’ll be sent home to heal and recover. It will take about 2 weeks to heal from the initial implant placement, but you will need 3-6 months for your jaw bone to bond with the implant permanently.
Throughout your recovery process, you’ll come to our office for check-ups with Dr. Annese, and he will begin creating your dental crown. Once your mouth has recovered from your surgery, you’ll come in for your final appointment, and your permanent crown will be attached to your implant, completing the procedure.
